Ro.wiki at 10.000 muokkaa

Please update your main page, moving romanian wikipedia ( http://ro.wikipedia.org ) to wikis with more than 10.000 articles. --Danutz

Several other Wikipedias that have passed the ten-thousand-article barrier are missing from Etusivu as well. --Hautala 12. joulukuuta 2004 kello 15:14 (UTC)
The placement of other wikis on the Main page is completely arbitrary (and some would even say random, but I digress) and reflects the presumed interests of Wikipedia users. And it looks pretty fine as it is. -- MikkoM ()  12. joulukuuta 2004 kello 21:46 (UTC)

Support for Finno-Ugric theory in Finland muokkaa

I'm terribly sorry but I don't speak Finnish. There has been a debate in the Hungarian Wikipedia about the support for the Finno-Ugric theory in Finland.

Some editors say that a number of Finnish linguists have turned away from this theory as early as the 1950s and now they support the Germanic origins of Finnish instead.

Other editors believe that Finno-Ugric still has the support of the overhelming majority of linguists in Finland.

So what's the truth about this? Is Finno-Ugric theory, that puts Hungarian and Finnish in the same language group still the dominant theory? Are there any alternatives thought in schools and higher education? Is this the "official" theory? Are there any notable linguists in Finland who object to the relation of Finnish and Hungarian? If so, who are they?

I'd appreciate any help, Nyenyec

As far as I know, all Finnish linguists think that Finnish and Hungarian are in the same language group. However, there is a somewhat heated discussion as to the genetical origin of Finns, which is far from being solved. In the discussion of genetical origins you will find linguists in both camps. --Samulili 11. tammikuuta 2005 kello 20:16 (UTC)
That's right. I asked prof. Ulla-Maija Kulonen from the University of Helsinki's Department of Finno-Ugrian Studies who said there is no disagreement about the validity of the Finno-Ugrian theory. Moreover she said nobody has made such claims that Finnish would have Germanic origins, even though there is a great amount of germanic loanwords. Hope this helps... Amanita 14. tammikuuta 2005 kello 07:44 (UTC)
Just noting for anyone interested that there has been a related debate at the english wikipedia. See en:Finno-Ugric languages and en:Uralic languages. Nynorsk Wikipedia - an immediate neighbour which should be mentioned... muokkaa

The Nynorsk Wikipedia passed 3000 articles on February 16. Since Nynorsk is one of the official languages of Finland's neighbouring country Norway, it would seem appropriate to have interwiki links on the Etusivu (Main) and Tuoreet muutokset (Recent changes) pages of the Finnish Wikipedia... :) All the best, Olve 16. helmikuuta 2005 kello 00:26 (UTC)

Interlanguage links muokkaa

For people adding interlanguage links: in Finnish Wikipedia the interlanguage links are ordered by the language name what shows in the sidebar, not by the language code. We have tried to make a list of language names and sometimes their transliterations in Wikipedia:Luettelo Wikipedian kielistä. The correct order of interlanguage links is at Wikipedia:Kieltenväliset linkit#Kielilinkkien järkevä käyttö. Please follow the rules and make finding one's language from the interlanguage link list easier. -Jean d'Arc 3. maaliskuuta 2005 kello 23:55 (UTC)

A new attempt to get the Wikimedia community to collaborate on multi-lingual tasks is the Wikimedia Collaboration of the Week. Please see the page on meta for details. It would be great if you could translate the following and add it to Kahvihuone. The text below is from en:Template:Wm-cotw and will be updated every week. Thanks. The Wikimedia Collaboration of the Week is an attempt to get the Wikimedia community to join forces in tackling problems that affect all our projects. The current COTW is to create a standard multilingual manual for the MediaWiki software. The help pages should be linked from Help:Contents on Meta, our Wikimedia-wide coordination wiki. Please see the instructions for this COTW and help to make it happen!

Localized date formats need to be verified muokkaa

Dear Wikipedians,

I need your help to look at date formats for your language. I created a large list of formats here. Please take a look and fix any mistakes or add any new formats. This will help interwiki bot to match en:April 1, fr:1 avril, ru:1 апреля, zh:4月1日, and all other sites together.

What's needed: Look here at every format for your language, fix any mistakes, note any exceptions (some languages have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc naming schemas, or year 1 is written as '1 (year)' unlike all other years).

Also, I would like to receive a bot status on your site for my bot User:YurikBot. It will be mostly involved in interwikies.

Thank you!!!

KIITOS! muokkaa

I am a professor (senior lecturer) at a Finnish University. I just wanted to say 'suur kiitos' to all of you who maintain these pages. They have been a big help to my students. However, I do tell them to cross-check the facts in your articles, because taking information from only one source is not a good idea! and it is not certain that all the articles are correct, despite the peer-pressure self-monitoring that Wikipedia entails. You're doing a great job, guys, and this was a great idea.

Please encourage them also correct the facts if there is any errors found. --TBone 31. lokakuuta 2005 kello 07:44:08 (UTC)

Wikizine muokkaa

Hi, I am w:nl:gebruiker:Walter of the dutch Wikipedia. I am writing you because your are listed as ambassador of your wiki. I have something to say that I think you will find useful and possibly others of your wiki also.

You know it is not easy for the members of a local wiki to be informed about what is going on in the higher levels of the Wikimedia family. This because of the language problem and the high level of fragmentation of places where you can find information.

I am now making a weekly news letter (Wikizine) that attempts to provide the news of the Wikimedia projects. The concept is to list only a very short description of the news an give the relevant url to the subject. I want it to be short, only give the news that is important for all projects. The target audience include the ambassadors. It is for people who are interested in what it going on outside there own wiki. I emphasize on the news that is practical-technical. The information comes form several "news"-pages on several wikis, the mailinglists and IRC. There will be news I can not discover. If you have news found somewhere or from you own wiki please let my know. wikizine AT wikipedia.be

I can only create one version in something that supposed to be English. I count on the readers to inform there local wiki about the news in there own language.

Wikizine is send by use of the mailinglist Announce-l. It is only used for this. So people can subscribe without being swamped by emails like the lists.

http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/announce-l

I hope that you and others of your wiki will subscribe to Wikizine and give feedback. So that Wikizine can become really a source where Wikimedians can find out what is going on. Greetings, w:nl:gebruiker:Walter PS: do not repond here. I will not see it.

Wikikokous Tampereella? muokkaa

Moro! (Epatamperelaisille: Moi!)

Aiotaanko jokin kokous kohta Tampereella? I put in a stub Theodor Fontane. If it is a nuisance I'll stop doing something like that. If not I'll put in similar stubs for German authors and German cities from time to time. --Cethegus 26. huhtikuuta 2006 kello 15.43 (UTC)

An article, even the smallest, should have a definition. I understand that you don't Finnish, so maybe it's best not to add such sub-stubs. However, putting a list of these people and cities to your user page with a link to the German article, would make a fine list of requested articles (there are quite a few people who can translate them). -Samulili 28. huhtikuuta 2006 kello 13.09 (UTC)

Helsinki, Kallion kirkko muokkaa

Hi all,

I was wondering if one of the bureaucrats of this wiki could rename User:Geraki to, say, "Geraki (usurped)", so I could merge it to my unified single username (I'm a bureaucrat on el.wikipedia and el.wikisource, and user of foundationwiki). I own the global account "Geraki" across all of Wikimedia, but only this account is registered by a different person [1].

User:Geraki has just one edit [ a dot :) ], and it's from two years ago now, so I hope this is no concern.

Usurpation requests muokkaa

Hello to all users requesting for username usurpation for consolidation purposes. I just wanted to let you know that the Finnish Wikipedia community is in the process of drafting a usurpation policy (sorry, in Finnish), which looks like will pass on June 18th with the following conditions:

  1. If a username is created for plain vandalism or impersonation purposes, it can be moved immediately
  2. If not, the user must not have any GFDL-notable edits
  3. If there are GFDL-notable edits, the usurpation can only be done with the permission of the user

Case number 1 is clear-cut and can be interpreted without considerable bias by admins and bureaucrats. In case number 2 the usurpation process will commence when a bureaucrat leaves a message in the user's talk page and also sends an e-mail (if enabled). Unless there are any objections or zero response from the user or any further GFDL edits during the next two weeks, the username can be usurped. In case number 3 the involved parties will probably have to negotiate peacefully about the usurpation and eventually reach an agreement, with the legitimate user of FI-Wikipedia (=with GFDL edits and no significant vandalism history or other inappropriate use of the username) having the veto right of any decision or request regarding his/her currently owned username.

I kindly ask you to be patient until the consensus on the policy has been reached and we can start enforcing it. Meanwhile, you can monitor the development of the usurpation policy – we're almost there. Thank you. --Jaakonam 13. kesäkuuta 2008 kello 21.04 (UTC)

Folks; thank you for your patience. Usurpation is now an official policy in the Finnish Wikipedia. Please refer to the page for instructions on how to proceed with your requests. --Jaakonam 17. kesäkuuta 2008 kello 19.42 (UTC)

Machine translation muokkaa

Is there a program where I can type in a sentence in English and have it converted to Finnish? Just wondering. thanks. Dena Kommentin jätti 129.19.1.10 (keskustelu – muokkaukset) 19. joulukuuta 2008 kello 22.42 (EEST)Vastaa

Free machine translation programs tend to produce nearly unintelligible gibberish. It's easier for most Finns to read the original text in English than these poor ”translations”. :) Commercial applications have developed a lot in the recent years, however, and some have free demo interfaces online. The SUNDA translator, for example, works surprisingly well. The demo version allows only one sentence to be translated at a time though. Edit: And only five sentences a day. –neurovelho 19. joulukuuta 2008 kello 22.36 (EET)Vastaa
And guess I should add that even the most advanced and expensive apps can do only so much. While their output is grammatically clean, there's still plenty of funny mistakes as they have no way to understand context et cetera. No current robot can produce text suitable for a Wikipedia article, imho.
That SUNDA page gave back my ”Free machine translation programs tend to produce nearly unintelligible gibberish.” as a sentence implying that free machine translation programs try to produce nearly unintelligible babbling. Not bad, but that's not what I meant. :) –neurovelho 19. joulukuuta 2008 kello 23.16 (EET)Vastaa
If you don't wanna install any application for that, you can use online translation sites like WorldLingo or FreeTranslation. But just like neurovelho said, it's mostly unreadable so it would be better to use english, as most of us can understand that. --Nrautava 6. heinäkuuta 2010 kello 00.10 (EEST)Vastaa

a list of keywords muokkaa

Hello,

I'm doing my project into language processing and I'm using Wikipedia. I want to use several languages in the tests, included the one of this version. And since I need some articles to analyze I wanted to ask for your help. Precisely, some keywords I will explain now.

Actually what I am looking for is a list in your language with the names of those territories which represents an entity of speakers (therefore possible wikipedia contributors) of your language, the name its people or gentilic, and the name of the language (if it is the same language and it has a different name). These territories must be in practice independent from each others or at least be considered so by the speakers. This is the case of colonies, excolonies, other countries which historically speak the same language or minorities attached into the country next to yours.

For example, a list in english something like. "english", "england", "irish", "ireland", "scottish", "scotland", "british", "united_kingdom", "american", "united_states", "canada", "canadian", "australia", "australian", "new_zealand", "new_zealander". Probably there are some others which are not very big but I don't know cuz I'm not familiar.

If you were so kind to produce me this list, I would so appreciate it! Thank you very much!

Foundation Images Policy muokkaa

Hi everyone,
I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is exempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Otherwise, for more details please visit http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Wikimedia_projects_still_using_non-commercial-only_images.3F Yosri 2. maaliskuuta 2011 kello 07.05 (EET)Vastaa

Tatra T77 muokkaa

Hello colleagues! I am from the german Wikipedia and know very much about the general topic "Tatra". The title of the articel is false. The T is for Tatra. I have got a longer discussion (in english) with a user from the englisch wikipedia. So the actuell title means "Tatra Tatra 77". "T77" is okey whenn you don't use Tatra ahead of it. It's a featured articel and I suppose, that the title should be also correct. Because of the articel-statues I won't move the articel. I was in the technicalmuseum in Kopřivnice (the official museum of the manufacturer) and saw only "Tatra ##" or "T##". Also I would be lucky, if all articels with the false title would be moved. I hope my english wasn't so bad. Regards, Alofok 18. helmikuuta 2011 kello 20.38 (EET)Vastaa

Secondary, the letter T is used also in Radomír Zavadil's books Vojenské automobily Tatra v letech 1918 až 1945 - Tatra Military Vehicles from 1918 to 1945; vol. 2 (ISBN 978-80-87161-00-5) and vol. 3 (ISBN 978-80-87161-03-6). He has also made a book about T57, I haven't got that yet, but you can see the cover here: [4]. It is notable, that Zavadil has used primary sources for making of his books, ie he has collected the information from Tatra archives. I know that there is a number of enthusiasts' web sites which do not use the letter T, but the manufacturer's model numbering is what matters. Besides, in my understanding the T doesn't mean Tatra but Type. I guess this is the reason why the T is often dropped off.
Please revert your changes (at least in the Finnish Wikipedia). --Gwafton 21. helmikuuta 2011 kello 09.40 (EET)Vastaa
hello gwafton. i don't revert my changes because they are correct. the t before the number stays for tatra, not for type. for nothing else. at this place (the tatra-museum in the czech republik) you can see an official advertisment of the tatra 77 in the background, also of other tatra cars. i am not using websites for such things, i am using only official papers of cars and advertisments pictures of the history when the car was produced. tatra has today big trouble and huge problems that they today use false facts. also they lost their traditions. wikipedia should use the title as it is and was usual in the time of the production. that some authors are using the t is a problem of them. i know many literature that isn't using the t. Alofok 24. helmikuuta 2011 kello 22.46 (EET)Vastaa

I dont really understand what do you mean with false history writing of Tatra in this context. Tatra (and many Czech sources) often "forget" to mention that the main designers as well as the owners before WW II were native Germans. Also Hans Ledwinka is often regarded as Czech although he was Austrian. But I don't find any connection to the naming issue in this. Production models were marked with T, prototypes with V. It wouldn't make sense if T meant Tatra, why V 570 is not called TV 570 then? I think the producer knows the best how their products should be called, therefore Tatra's own version of the model names is the one which counts. --Gwafton 1. maaliskuuta 2011 kello 17.35 (EET)Vastaa
so, i have no other possibility: i write in the next days an e-mail to tatra because of the cars' name. Alofok 1. maaliskuuta 2011 kello 19.12 (EET)Vastaa
That would clarify this issue. In case they say that T is not needed with the old models, it would be good to know how it is with the new model names. Please ask them also about the prototype model names (the V-models). Mr Zátopek in Tatra Technical Museum could also maybe answer to this. I was in contact with him regarding some other matters for about one year ago. He can speak German. --Gwafton 2. maaliskuuta 2011 kello 10.09 (EET)Vastaa
But I am also able to talk Czech. Alofok 3. maaliskuuta 2011 kello 23.52 (EET)Vastaa
Ok, that will make things even easier. :) Anyway, I am curious about the answer of Tatra. --Gwafton 4. maaliskuuta 2011 kello 10.18 (EET)Vastaa

Help with translation? muokkaa

The Wikimedia Foundation is preparing to launch a survey that it hopes will be helpful in discussing the future of how projects are funded on Wikipedia and sister sites. (More information about this can be read at meta:Fundraising and Funds Dissemination/Resource list and meta:Fundraising and Funds Dissemination/Recommendations, but you don't need to read it to help out here. :)) We would like input from as many people as possible, but the survey translations are not yet completed in many languages, including yours. The English version of the survey is at meta:Survey of how money should be spent/Questions/en. The Finnish version, currently 24% complete, is at meta:Survey_of_how_money_should_be_spent/Questions/fi. If you can help, you would be very welcome!

Translations are done using the "translation tool". If you go to this special page, all you have to do is select your language from the pull-down menu and click "fetch". It will bring up a table. You can easily see what has been translated and what has not. Click on the blue text in the left column next to content that has not been translated to open up an editing box. Above the box, the English version is shown, and you can simply enter in your language translation beneath it.

The survey is pretty short, so I hope we can get it completed in time to send it to Finnish editors in their own language. Thanks for any help you can offer! --Mdennis (WMF) (keskustelu) 5. maaliskuuta 2012 kello 17.23 (EET)Vastaa

Article translation request muokkaa

I am trying to find someone who can help to translate User:Russavia/Polandball into Finnish. If anyone could help with that, it would be great if you could drop me a message on email (russavia.wikipedia@gmail.com) or on my Commons talk page (Commons:User_talk:Russavia). All editors have my permission to edit the article at User:Russavia/Polandball to do the translation.

The article already exists on Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Arabic, Dutch, Greek, Swahili, Persian, etc Wikipedias. Any help with translating this article would be greatly appreciated

In return for a translation of the article, I will upload 40 new Finland-related images to Commons, from a range of subjects. Russavia (keskustelu) 11. toukokuuta 2012 kello 02.48 (EEST)Vastaa

Hi Russavia. This was deleted from the English Wikipedia and at first sight looks unlikely to meet the notability guidelines here. If someone does decide to try to get an encyclopedic article out of this, at the very least the comic will need to go. Jafeluv (keskustelu) 11. toukokuuta 2012 kello 11.03 (EEST)Vastaa
Hi Jafeluv, it was deleted from English Wikipedia because of wikipolitics. It was deleted on enwp, but was kept at AfD on Russian Wikipedia, is going thru deletion on Dutch Wikipedia and looks like it will survive. It now also exists on Catalan, Spanish, Persian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarussian, Greek, Croatian, Slovak, and even Mingrelian Wikipedia. All of these articles were created AFTER the nationalist-driven AfD on English Wikipedia. In addition, there are translations have already been begun for French, Portuguese, Japanese and Romanian wikipedias, with Swedish, Danish, Lithuanian, Estonian, Serbian, Basque, and yes, Polish, translations being organised and will be available before too long. Also, the English article will be undergoing deletion review in the next couple of weeks. So I would ignore English Wikipedia in its entirety and instead use all the other articles that exist to determine whether something is notable, and whether those projects have ignored English Wikipedia rubbish.
As to not being notable for Finnish wikipedia, I have reviewed Luokka:Internet-ilmiöt and the article, with a natural Finnish translation, would be better written, and more reliably sources, than the vast majority of the articles in that category. As to any images used, that would be a matter for editorial discretion and discussion, but being a user-generated internet meme, it is well within the scope of the article. I will also note that several articles in that category have undergone deletion, and were kept.
I will also note, that the Finnish translation at User:Russavia/Polandball has already started. All that is needed is any interested editors who can help to translate the rest. I will likely be able to get some more Finns to help with it, but it may be several weeks before they can help. Hence the message above. Cheers, Russavia (keskustelu) 25. toukokuuta 2012 kello 10.34 (EEST)Vastaa

I tried with Google Translate, but its translation is not perfectly clear). If possible, I would also like a comment about the reliability of the source (seems that the author of the linked page is on your wiki: Veli-Matti Hynninen: is that him?).

it.wiki in trouble, once again, this time is worse than last year muokkaa

Hi, this is just to let you know that the dangerous law that wasn't issued last year, when we blacked-out the site, is once again under discussion at the Italian Senate. This time things seem to be much much worse than one year ago. The act is now harder and contains many more obligations, so many and so dangerous that no sysops would work at such conditions because it would definitely be too risky. Very few among our users would go on editing BLPs or "spicy" topics any more because it could be very costly: up to 100,000 euros! And any legalised troll saying that something in our articles disturbs him, would be entitled to request an addition (inside the article) which actually we are not going to accept because the troll is not required to be honest and tell the truth, any liar would be legally welcomed and we couldn't even comment... (I'm not kidding, it's incredible but true...)
Moreover, this time the approval could more probably be forced by the so-called technical government (headed by Mr. Monti), and all the bigger Italian parties toghether (Berlusconians hands in hands with former communists - both had separately tried to enforce such an act before) are working for strengthening the act. So, this time we need a critical help from anyone, we need it now because the scheduled vote on next Monday could be the last time we can freely work on it.wiki. We need it strong because main Italian media are simply ignoring our protest, and we can't read any news about it outside the web.
So, please, please, please, do whatever you can in order to avoid at least that this can happen in a complete silence. Inform your deputy, call the closest Italian embassy, spam your papers and/or our Senators (open individual files for addresses), use your fantasy and do whatever you think might be strongly helpful in protecting Wikipedia, starting from spreading the news across the WikiWorld.
Any little thing you can do will be vitally important for it.wiki.
Thank you in advance --g (talk) 00:09, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the info, but I suggest you people stop trying to use Wikipedia as a political tool. There are ways to make your views on proposed legislation known, but an encyclopedia is not the place to do it. Jafeluv (keskustelu) 27. lokakuuta 2012 kello 14.20 (EEST)Vastaa

Well, they made a great big bloody abortion out of my beautiful page.
They removed all of the actual functionality.

I understand how you feel, but you should really not be linking the reader to pages they won't understand. One of our delightful vandals is continuing their abuse and harassment from within the IP ranges managed by dnainternet.fi. As the abusive behaviour is escalating stewards have contacted the ISP, provided details of the abuse, asked for support in resolving this matter, and to this point there has been no response from the internet provider. Stewards are now implementing blocks as required to manage these issues, and we are aware that there will be collateral impact on other users, for which we apologise now. If you are a customer of dnainternet.fi, and wish to support the stewards in the dealing with dnainternet.fi, then please do contact them and support our calls to them for action.

If you are adversely impacted, your local administrators should be able to assist users with accounts, alternatively you can contact stewards at m:Steward requests/Global permissions or by emailing stewards (at) wikimedia.org. • "Jyväskylän yhteislyseo" is a school, it's now known as Jyväskylän normaalikoulu.
  • Teollisuuden keskusvaliokunta - I haven't heard of it and googling doesn't help much, but sounds like it's some kind of interest association of big industrial companies.
  • "Suomen Puunjalostusteollisuuden keskusliitto" is now known as Metsäteollisuus ry (it merged with another similar organization in 1992).
I hope this helps. --Harriv (keskustelu) 4. heinäkuuta 2014 kello 22.53 (EEST)Vastaa
Teollisuuden keskusvaliokunta became later Elinkeinoelämän valtuuskunta, which is unofficially translated to "Finnish Business and Policy Forum EVA". Verbatim it is "Standing committee of industry". Both organisations are driven by big employers, but while the latter is mainly the counterpart of trade unions (in Paper and forest industry) in employment negotiations, the former tries to be a wider discussion forum. --Tappinen (keskustelu) 4. heinäkuuta 2014 kello 23.06 (EEST)Vastaa

Ten years of Wikipedia in Asturian language muokkaa

Excuse me for not speaking Finnish yet.

Oviedo, September 8, 2014

Asturian is alive and in use.

Next September 12 and 13, the Asturian Wikipedia community of users will celebrate with the support of Wikimedia España Chapter the tenth anniversary of Uiquipedia, the free encyclopedia in Asturian. The events will take place in Auditorio Príncipe Felipe (Plaza La Gesta, Oviedo).

The first article in Asturian was «Zazaki», a minority language spoken in Turkey. That first edit was in July 26, 2004. Ten years later, more than 800 000 edits have been made on almost 20 000 articles, and numbers are growing every day with the work of tens of volunteers. And it doesn’t stop there: other Wikimedia projects in Asturian have developed, such as Wikicionary, Wikisource and Wikiquote. Managed by Wikimedia Foundation, all of them make part of a global movement that started in 2001 when Wikipedia started with the goal of delivering freely all human knowledge.

To commemorate this date, Uiquipedia and Wikimedia España are carrying out two days of celebration events so that the projects in Asturian are better known. Literature, poetry music and traditions in Asturian will be present. It’s free and everybody is welcome. In addition, Wikimedia España will have its annual General Assembly in Oviedo.

See here the schedule of activities.

Monuments of Spain Challenge muokkaa

Excuse me for not speaking Finnish yet.

Wikimedia España invites you to join the Monuments of Spain Challenge. And what’s that? It’s a contest. You have to edit, translate or expand articles about the Spanish monuments and you will be granted points. So you’re not just writing about wonderful buildings: you can get prizes!

The time of the contest will include all October and any information you may need is right here.

Join in and good luck!

PS: We would be grateful if you could translate this note into Finnish.

Literal translation, and one other thing muokkaa

  1. I want to put literal translation alongside with transliteration, like Korean: 기계; RR: gigye; literally "machine". what should I do?
  2. If a localisation of a name of some fictional character is based on foreign words (rather than native words), what should I do? For example, a character is called Ichiro in the original Japanese version, as well as English, Finnish and Swedish versions. But in Korean version, the character is renamed 잭, which is transliterated as Jaek according to RR, but it is actually came from "Jack", a typical English name. JSH-alive (keskustelu) 22. toukokuuta 2015 kello 09.59 (EEST)Vastaa
  1. What's the problem? Just put it. But please do not machine translate articles into Finnish.
  2. Well, I don't understand your problem. May be that is why nobody answered your questions because the problem is unclear. --85.76.107.29 6. kesäkuuta 2015 kello 19.24 (EEST)Vastaa
In the case of 2), our guideline for editing East Asian related articles (Ohje:Itä-Aasiaa käsittelevät artikkelit) states that for borrowed (non-native) words, source language conventions should be used when displaying the name in a latinized form -- for instance, サンダーバード would be written out as Thunderbird, not Sandābādo. Sandābādo should only be used for direct latinization of the relevant non-latin script, for instance Thunderbird (jap. サンダーバード, Sandābādo). In your case, Jack (kor. 잭, Jaek). --Pitke (keskustelu) 6. kesäkuuta 2015 kello 23.35 (EEST)Vastaa
Then what about this? Talvikki from Tiketi Tok (Tickety Toc) is known as Tallulah in English, and 틸리 (RR: Tili, from English Tilly) in Korean. What should I do? Talvikki (eng. Tallulah, kor. 틸리, Tili "Tilly")? JSH-alive (keskustelu) 7. kesäkuuta 2015 kello 18.42 (EEST)Vastaa
That's a degree more complicated than what we're had this far, but I would, for the specific needs of this article, do it this way: "Talvikki (eng. Tallulah, kor. Tilly (틸리)), or better yet, something along the lines of "Talvikki is [character description]. Her name is Tallulah in the English and Tilly (틸리, Tili) in the Korean production." --Pitke (keskustelu) 8. kesäkuuta 2015 kello 22.22 (EEST)Vastaa

Copyrighted monuments in Finland muokkaa

I have strange problem with Wikipedia Deletion Request.

I have made a photo shot of the statue installed in the public place in Helsinki and uploaded it to Wikipedia. But I was told that this statue is copyrighted and therefore my image should be deleted.

After studying Freedom of Panorama (FOP) I realized that images of statues for which copyright is not expired, can not be uploaded to wikimedia.

But several questions arise:

  1. What is the copyright length for statues in Finland? In other words - how can I understand is specific statue is copyrighted?
  2. If I open a picture listed at https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luettelo_Helsingin_patsaista_ja_muistomerkeist%C3%A4 I can see: (an example) So, "some rights are reserved". I suppose, commercial use is prohibited. Does it mean that I need to simply delete image from wikimedia and upload it to wikipedia directly with this restricted license? How can I do this?
  3. (related to the previous question) In general I can not understand how this list (see above) with images can even exist if these images can not be uploaded to Wikimedia (and they are!)
  4. Is it possible to organize "Wiki loves monuments" campaign in Finland? It looks like it is possible only if the scope of the campaign is limited only to non-copyrighted monuments and any buildings. Is it correct understanding?

Vitaly repin (keskustelu) 9. syyskuuta 2015 kello 12.41 (EEST)Vastaa

  1. Copyright length for statues in Finland is 70 years from the authors death. So the statue is free from the copyright in Finland if the author is died before 1945. Statue is free from copyright in both US and Finland if the author is died before 1926 (or maybe 1928 now) OR if the author is died before 1945 and if the statue is published before 1923.
  2. You can upload your picture locally to Finnish Wikipedia with toiminnot:Tallenna (special:upload) and you need to fill following information:
{{Tiedoston tiedot
| Kuvaus = DESCRIPTION (add detailed information of the statue to this. )
| Lähde = SOURCE OF PICTURE
| Päiväys = DATE
| Tekijä = AUTHOR
| Tekijänoikeuksien haltija = WHO OWNS THE COPYRIGHT OF THE IMAGE (not needed if author is added)
}}

{{Taideteos|Ajan virta|{{Cc-by-2.0}}}}
<!-- Taideteos template is [[:Right_to_quote]] -licence for works of art and first param is name of the article where picture is used and second param is licence for the photograph. Eg the photograph and the statue have both their own licences. -->
  1. They are used in Luettelo_Helsingin_patsaista_ja_muistomerkeistä per Non-free images or music samples are allowed if 1) they are not replaceable by free content considering the purpose which they are serving in the article and 2) they are used in accordance with the quotation right of the Finnish copyright law. Historically significant non-free images are forbidden, as they could be replaced. Also non-free images of living people are forbidden. (m:Non-free_content), but you need to ask from user:Kulttuurinavigaattori if you need more detailed information.
  2. Correct. We participated 2013 to Wiki loves public art and based on that practical scope of the WLM would be non-copyrighted monuments and buildings.

JavaScript muokkaa

Hi. I can see that this project has old JavaScript that needs to be updated. I would happily make the required updates myself, but I would have to – at least temporarily – become an admin here to do that (because the relevant pages are in the MediaWiki namespace). I have already made these updates on a number of Swedish projects and one Norwegian project, so it would be very easy for me to do this. If no one does anything, a lot of JavaScript-related tools will break later this year. Does the community want me to make these updates? Nirmos (keskustelu) 31. toukokuuta 2016 kello 22.07 (EEST)Vastaa

I would support to grant a temporary admin for you just to update those pages in the MediaWiki namespace, as you didn't get the global edit interface rigts (link). Though we have also few users with JS knowledge. I wonder how urgent those updates are? It seems there are quite many users with global interface editor rights, so most likely some of them will update those pages before than they will completely break? --Stryn (keskustelu) 31. toukokuuta 2016 kello 22.33 (EEST)Vastaa
It depends. They did this sort of thing at last year and everything was broken (1) so if those aren't fixed then everything will be broken. I am also happy if somebody is doing fix things so granting the admin right is ok for me (it helps that you are admin in svwiki and edits seems to be legit too [6]) However it would nice to get some list what should be changed (addOnloadHook, importscript, mwVariables, anything else?) I think that we should do also some list which gatgets are WONTFIX because they should be removed from gadgets.--Zache (keskustelu) 31. toukokuuta 2016 kello 22.57 (EEST)Vastaa
Also least part of the changes are pretty straightforward so they could be done with AWB. --Zache (keskustelu) 1. kesäkuuta 2016 kello 11.11 (EEST)Vastaa
Oppose. Stryn and Zache have both asked follow-up questions and Nirmos has not answered them. While I have no doubt that he is a reliable and trusted user, we need more information. We simply cannot just give admin rights to someone who will not provide to the community-at-large with necessary information. Nirmos is just asking for various rights without properly explaining what he is going to do. A week has passed already. --Pxos (keskustelu) 8. kesäkuuta 2016 kello 12.25 (EEST)Vastaa
Neither I or Stryn haven't done anything either and my question was more or less for all (including me) and not just for Nirmos. --Zache (keskustelu) 8. kesäkuuta 2016 kello 12.41 (EEST)Vastaa
The question on temporary admin rights for Nirmos has been opened at Sekalaista. Apart from one comment from LPfi, there is no discussion. Articles for deletion muokkaa

I want to file following articles for deletion:

This is outrageous and ridiculous. It's better the filmographies on voice acting go to the individual articles about actors, rather than having them consolidated into large chunks of list articles. JSH-alive (keskustelu) 12. kesäkuuta 2016 kello 11.57 (EEST)Vastaa

Reason for the merge was that contents of voice acting lists are less unsourced and editors who are editing them are ignoring the comments which other editors are writing to them. Also there is lot of editing from dynamic ip:s so it is not so easy to do discuss with editors of the voice actor articles anyway. Second problem is that it is not just ignoring the rules but there is problem with vandalism (least two known larger cases, eg. "Grodan Boll-vandalen" from svwiki which was editing the fiwiki too and "Poutapoukaman Eeli" vandal whose some of edits are most likely good but unsourced. However there is clear vandalism from "Poutapoukaman Eeli" too).
So the problem is that it is hard or impossible to know if the information in the lists are correct or not. Also same problem is with the new edits too (because edits are mostly from dynamic ip:s, unsourced etc). This problem with voice acting edits has has been also issue in the administrator notice board in recent years too.
Solution for this was to move voice acting lists from the actor articles to lists so we can clean up the individual actor articles. This is something which is important because they are mainly BLP:s (bioraphies of living people) and we try to keep them straight. Second reason is that in this way we can focus least part of voice acting edits to single articles and in this way those doesn't piss of the other editors like current ignoring the rules is doing. Third reason to merge them was to try to figure out what to do to those lists. One thing is to unify the contents of the different sublists and second is to try get some information about how differentiate the information about the roles which can be be checked from some source which cannot.
Anyway if you have ideas what we should do with he voice acting lists then you are welcome to discuss it in talk:Luettelo suomalaisten näyttelijöiden äänirooleista A-I or in Wikiprojekti_ääninäyttelijät wikiproject. Writing in english is perfectly fine and sorry about my bad english. --Zache (keskustelu) 12. kesäkuuta 2016 kello 12.51 (EEST)Vastaa

More info on "The Thundermans" muokkaa

Hi. I am from the United States. I need more info on The Thundermans, for an immigrant friend who loves the show. I don't know Finnish, so here's the page.

http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thundermans

Add more info on the show, the plot, each character, and the cast, and the Haunted Thundermans and Danger & Thunder crossovers. Add lots of spoilers, as the show is not aired in Finland. Also, I want the article to closely mirror the English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thundermans) and French (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Thunderman) pages. There is a machine translated page about Phoebe (a character), http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoebe_Thunderman that needs editing, a picture, and more info. Also create pages for actors Jack Griffo and Kira Kosarin, with pictures and in-depth info.

A lot of pages need to be in-depth as well, not just this one. One person on a language site has said, "How come they can have a variety of long and in-depth pages about rock music, video games, and anime, but not about my favorite show, comic books, superheroes, R&B artists, albums, and music, and everyday items (such as anglophobia, some medical terms and American culture)?"

This is true about the Finnish Wikipedia. They have so many in-depth pages, and even stub pages, about rock music and video games, and not much pages about everything else. The stereotype that everyone in Finland likes rock music and video games is not true.

Sorry I can't explain it in English, hardly I can explain in Finnish either. "Elokuva" is not a proper noun so it must be written with a small first letter. The correct name for the article would be "My Little Pony -elokuva" or "My Little Pony (elokuva)", as "elokuva" is not actually part of the movie's title, as Abc10 said. PS, pings still are not working (phab:T177825). Stryn (keskustelu) 14. lokakuuta 2017 kello 23.22 (EEST)Vastaa
Surely "Elokuva" can be a proper noun in Finnish, justa like "Maalaus" is the title name given to numerous individual paintings by Finnish painters. For example, perhaps the film makers (or distributors) would like to allude to the famous "Elokuva" described by Jean Cocteau: ”Eläköön nuori muusa nimeltä Elokuva, koska sillä on hallussaan unen mysteeri ja sen avulla epätodellinen muuttuu todelliseksi.” (Jean Cocteau, 1959, Finnish translation given by KAVI). ¬Antilope 15. lokakuuta 2017 kello 02.43 (EEST)Vastaa
I'm sure "Elokuva" is a part of the title, just like Lego Elokuva, Lego Batman Elokuva and Lego Ninjago Elokuva. JSH-alive (keskustelu) 15. lokakuuta 2017 kello 14.17 (EEST)Vastaa

WikiScienceCompetition 2017 muokkaa

Hi! Wiki Science Competition has started, sitenotices have appeared for sure in Spain, Austria, Russian Federation, USA and Ukraine, and Italy will be join very soon with a massive national campaign.

As a member of the academic committee I did my best to reduce the gap between countries both in the composition of the juries and now in the outreach. I did inform many platforms (enwiki, eswiki, frwiki) during the preparation of the event, now I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology I can contact, especially those located in countries without national juries (so, also in Finland) and I am posting notes on LinkedIn groups everyday, and I am contacting national chapters and user groups.. and so on. That's why I am here.

We prepared banners for many countries but on meta they say it is not wise to use them all, so if you want to use the style and do one here on your wiki for few days, just let us know. In your case the banner is not country-specific so it is generic.

Otherwise, if you have social media and you want to inform your friends and colleagues, the twitter hashtags are #WSC2017, #WikiScience2017, #WikiScience

Thank you in advance and whatever you do(join, inform, ignore) have fun!Alexmar983 (keskustelu) 4. marraskuuta 2017 kello 07.57 (EET)Vastaa

Common name muokkaa

Pinkku Pinsku is a kind of stage name of Pinja Sanaksenaho who runs her own YouTube channel. She voiced Princess Cadence in the Finnish dub of My Little Pony: The Movie (2017).

While I was editing the My Little Pony: Elokuva article, I choose Pinkku Pinsku name, because its the common name, and people usually refer the celebrities by stage name over real name. But some folks were replacing it with the real name Pinja Sanaksenaho. Now what? JSH-alive (keskustelu) 15. helmikuuta 2018 kello 17.23 (EET)Vastaa
