Infocom

Infocom oli yhdysvaltalainen ohjelmistoyritys. Sen perustivat vuonna 1979 MIT:n henkilökunnan ja opiskelijoiden muodostama ryhmä, johtajinaan Dave Lebling, Marc Blank, Albert Vezza ja Joel Berez. Vuonna 1986 Activision osti yrityksen, ja sulki yksikön vuonna 1989, joskin vielä 1990-luvulla Activision jatkoi Zork-sarjan brändin käyttöä.

Infocom tuli tunnetuksi erityisesti tietokonepelien tuottajana, mutta teki myös toimisto-ohjelmia. Toimisto-ohjelmista tunnetuin oli relaatiotietokantaohjelmisto Cornerstone.

Infocom tunnettiin parhaiten tekstiseikkailupeleistä. Sarjan kantaosa oli Blankin ja Leblingin vuonna 1977 kehittämä Zork, jonka kolmena osana 1980-luvulla julkaistu mikrotietokoneversio myi miljoonia kappaleita. Yhtenä Infocomin menestyksen takeena oli erittäin kehittynyt komentokieli (Z-machine); kun useimmat aikaisemmat tekstiseikkailut tunnistivat vain esimerkiksi verbin ja objektin, Infocomin komentoparseri pystyi käsittelemään hyvinkin monimutkaisia komentoja, kuten "open mailbox, take leaflet and read it" ("avaa postilaatikko, ota lehtinen ja lue se"). Vuosien kuluessa Infocom palkkasi useita myöhemmin kuuluisaksi tulleita pelinkehittäjiä, kuten Steve Meretzkyn. Myös Linnunradan käsikirja liftareille -romaanisarjan kirjoittaja Douglas Adams oli mukana pelien tekemisessä, johtuen Infocomin tekemästä kirjan tekstiseikkailusovituksesta; hänen käsialaansa on tekstiseikkailu Bureaucracy.
