Metafysiikassa Schuon sovelsi [[Platon]]in ja [[Adi Shankara]]n ajattelua. Hän kuuluu metafysiikan [[traditionalistinen koulukunta|traditionalistisen koulukunnan]] perustajiin [[René Guénon]]'n ja [[Ananda Coomaraswamy]]n ohella. Schuon on kirjoittanut myös vertailevaa [[uskontotiede]]ttä.

[[Ahmad al-Alawi|Ahmad al-Alawin]] vihittyä hänet ''Shādhilī'' -veljeskuntaan, Schuon perusti ''Maryamiyya -''nimisen oppilaitoksen (Tarīqa). Schuon loi läheisiä ystävyyssuhteita monien eri uskonnollisten vaikuttajien kanssa.
