Biometanoli muokkaa

Biometanoli tarkoittaa biomassasta valmistettua metanolia.[3] Biometanolin valmistukseen ei tarvitse käyttää ravinnoksi kelpaavia kasveja tai kasvien osia.[4][5][6]

Metanolitalouden tarve muokkaa

Metanolitalouden etuja muokkaa

Puhdasta metanolia käytettiin Indianapolis 500 -autokilpailujen ainoana sallittuna polttoaineena 40 vuoden ajan.

Metanoli yksinkertaisimpana alkoholina on helposti tuotettavissa useilla eri prosesseilla ja eri raaka-aineista. Ylivoimaisesti yleisin metanolin tuotantoon käytetty raaka-aine on maakaasu, jonka muunnoksessa metanoliksi hyötysuhde on korkea.

Metanolitalouden ongelmia muokkaa

Metanolitalouden toteutettavuus muokkaa

Dimetyylieetteriä on menestyksellisesti käytetty dieselmoottoristen ajoneuvojen polttoaineena.

This was accomplished by using a deep bedrock well to remove groundwater that was then sprayed, to aerate the water and add oxygen, into a crushed concrete filled trench dug 35 feet into the overlying clay. Bacteria and fertilizer were occasionally added to the trench and the concrete provided a matrix for the bacteria to grow. This treated groundwater infiltrated into the upper saturated zone and this water was then induced to flow into the bedrock aquifer by the pumping at the deep well. This well created an in situ, recirculation zone that addressed groundwater in both zones."

In the Chemrec AB pilot plant in Piteå, Sweden about 6 tons per day of methanol is used as an intermediate in the production of BioDME. (englanniksi) Lainaus: "DME burns so cleanly that the engine needs no exhaust-gas recirculation, a diesel particulate filter or variable geometry turbocharger – all sources of reliability problems and maintenance expense for owners of modern truck diesels, Saxman said. It’s injected at relatively low pressures, so the fuel system needn’t be so stout."

It has a cetane number of 55, compared with 40 to 53 for diesel fuel. Burning it yields low emissions of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, and no soot or particulates."

Flex-fuel vehicles let consumers and the market choose the winning fuels and feedstocks based on economics."

This will force all automobiles produced worldwide to be made flex-fueled, thereby creating a huge global market for alcohol fuels. Some of these fuels, such as methanol, can already be produced substantially more cheaply than gasoline, and only need the market provided by a flex-fuel mandate to drive enormous production capabilities into existence."

The benefits are two-fold: The process removes harmful CO2 from the atmosphere, and the methanol can be used as an alternative fuel to gasoline. The work represents an important step that could one day lead to a future "methanol economy," in which fuel and energy storage are primarily based on methanol."
