Uskonnoissa sillä tarkoitetaan henkilön fyysistä kuolemaa ja sen jälkeistä, yleensä kolmantena päivänä tapahtuvaa uudelleen ilmestymistä. Esimerkiksi [[kristinusko]]ssa [[Jeesus|Jeesuksen]] ylösnousemuksella on keskeinen merkitys. Sillä voidaan tarkoittaa myös koko ihmiskunnan ylösnousemusta [[tuomiopäivä]]nä.
