Lukuunottamatta [[5-HT3-reseptori|5-HT₃-reseptoria]], joka on [[ionikanavareseptori]], kaikki muut serotoniinireseptorit ovat [[G-proteiinikytkentäinen reseptori|G-proteiinikytkentäisiä reseptoreja]], jotka aktivoivat [[Toisiolähetti|toisiolähettejä]] hermosolun sisällä, jotta viesti välittyy eteenpäin.
