Sorelin poliittiset kannat vaihtelivat sosialismista syndikalismiin ja nationalismista kommunismiin; hän uskoi vahvasti esim. Leninin bolshevismiin ennen kuolemaansa 1922. Hänen päätyönään voidaan pitää ''Reflections on Violence'' -teosta, jossa esitellään 'puhdas' ja eettinen väkivallan muoto, joka ei ole sama asia kuin kapitalistisen sortovallan katkeruuteen ja kostoon pohjautuva väkivalta. Hän yrittää konstruoida proletariaatille ihmisen intuitiivisuuteen ja impulsiivisuuteen vetoavaa yleislakon myyttiä, joka on suunnattu erityisesti reformistisosialistien ja überkonservatiivien epäpyhää ja passivoivaa vaikutusta vastaan. Sorel kannatti lähes nietzscheläistä vitaalisuuden ideaalia, ja terveen väkivaltainen toiminta proletariaatin osalta aktivoisi myös porvaristoa muuhun kuin hitaasti vetäytyvään sovinnaisuuteen.
