(370) THE MARKET OF SOKOTO. 371 morning through the south-eastern quarter of the town, pro-ceeding through the kdfa-n-Atiku, thence along the wall,toward the west, and re-entered the town by the kdfa-n-AliJedu, where the whole quarter is very desolate, even the wallbeing in a state of decay, and the fine mosque, built by thegedado during Clappertons stay here, fallen entirely to ruins.But, even in the present reduced condition of the place, themarket still presented a very interesting sight, the numerousgroups of people, buyers as well as sellers, and the animalsof various descriptions, being picturesquely scattered over therocky slope, as I have endeavored to represent in the plateopposite.
