Vuonna 1990 julkaistussa tietosanakirjassa The Random House Encyclopedia pohdittiin planeettaa, joka kiertäisi Proxima Centauria. Kirjaan oli tehty kuvitus tuolloin otaksumanvaraisesta planeetasta. |

This picture of its surface is thus founded on something more than sheer imagination. Proxima Centauri is a dim red dwarf that has never joined the main sequence nor passed through the giant stage of evolution. Proxima does not cast as much light as the Sun on its attendants. The planet thought to be moving around it is assumed to have an orbital period of between 10 and 12 days. The outer edge or limb, of Proxima is not sharp, like that of our Sun, but is diffuse, since density of the outer layers is very low. It is also assumed that the planet retains a tenuous atmosphere. Since Proxima is a flare star, the climate of an inner planet will be very unstable and the landscape extremely desolate. No life can be expected there. But water, shown in the picture as a like fringed by glittering crystals of ice, may survive. The black disk represents a possible satellite as it would be seen in silhouette against the red disk of Proxima. In the sky is seen a familiar constellation pattern: the W of Cassiopeia, all of whose stars are very remote and will therefore look much the same from the planet of Proxima as it does from our own planet.
