These estimates may be fitly closed with this eloquentthought: When Mr. Moody speaks, it is not hirrfself alone towhom the audience listens, but the whole voice and power ofChristianity itself behind him, offering the hope whose beautytime never obscures, the forgiveness which humanity neverceases to desire, the ideals of moral and religious life whoseforce and excellence the succession of ages only strengthens. 44 Moodys early life. It is not so much what the preacher says, as what the audiencefeels. The people lose sight of the plain speaker, and even ofhis conceptions, and hear the echo of the voice, still soundingthrough the centuries, of Him who spake as never man spoke.Under that voice they rise to a new life. Before we accompany this beloved brother to England, wemust give some account of his famous coadjutor, the sweetsinger, Ira D. Sankey.

His father and mother were natives of Mercercounty, Penn., now Lawrence county, where the famous gospelsinger also first saw the light, on the 28th of August, 1840.This event has made the town of Edenburg famous, and mil-lions will hear of it, because of their interest in him as Mr.Moodys associate whose songs of grace and salvation are ring-ing round the world. Mr. Sankeys father was a man of considerable importance inthe place where he lived, having held offices of trust and honorfor many years. He was in good circumstances, and gavehis son ample opportunities to obtain education. He knewlittle of the severe trials of poverty and was not compelled toendure any of its hardships, although he was by no meansbrought up in luxury.
