IRA D. SANKEY. THE EARLY LIFE OF IRA DAVID SANKEY.CHAPTER VIII. THE BOY IS FATHER TO THE MAN. He was born and reared amidst surroundings quite unlike Mr.Moodys. His father and mother were natives of Mercercounty, Penn., now Lawrence county, where the famous gospelsinger also first saw the light, on the 28th of August, 1840.This event has made the town of Edenburg famous, and mil-lions will hear of it, because of their interest in him as Mr.Moodys associate whose songs of grace and salvation are ring-ing round the world. Mr. Sankeys father was a man of considerable importance inthe place where he lived, having held offices of trust and honorfor many years. He was in good circumstances, and gavehis son ample opportunities to obtain education. He knewlittle of the severe trials of poverty and was not compelled toendure any of its hardships, although he was by no meansbrought up in luxury.
