Indo-Europeans vs. Proto-Indo-Europeans

I am not a professional in ethnology. But I am sure, these two terms do not mean the same. If you compare the different Wikipedia languages articles concerning “Indo-Europeans” and “Proto-Indo-Europeans”, the common explanation is:

• Indo-Europeans describe the (today's and ancient) speakers of an Indo-European language. This term is sometimes also used to define some ethnic, physical or even “racial” parameters, but these last meanings are still highly controversial.

• Proto-Indo-Europeans describe the (original) speakers of the (one) Proto-Indo-European language (comparably with Latin, which is the mother language of all Romanic languages). Thus, it defines the speakers before the splitting in many newer (Indo-European) languages. Further this term also explains a hypothetical ethnic group; however this is not all over 100% accepted.

So, my question is, about what is "Indoeurooppalainen kantakansa" talking, about the "Indo-Europeans" or the "Proto-Indo-Europeans"? --lorn10 18:05, 25. March 2006 (CET)

If I undesrtand, in Finnish language this "kansa" means people or nation, "kanta"-prefix leads to proto, so I assume, there would be no point to change the name of the article, by the way. Höyhens 25. maaliskuuta 2006 kello 17.13 (UTC)

Harkitsin muuten nimeämistä muiden kielten mukaan "protoindoeurooppalaisiksi", mutta se ei oikein kuulosta suomelta enkä ole nähnyt sitä missään. "Kantakansa" on ainakin jossain määrin käytetty sana.--ML 11. kesäkuuta 2006 kello 19.43 (UTC)

Vakiintunut suomenkielinen käännös olisi ymmärtääkseni kantaindoeurooppalaiset (vert. kantasuomalaiset, kantagermaanit, kantaslaavit...)  –Kommentin jätti 130.234.68.221 (keskustelu)
