Wolfsonin historiapalkinto

Wolfsonin historiapalkinto (engl. Wolfson History Prize) on vuosittain Britanniassa jaettava kirjallisuuspalkinto.[1] Sen tarkoituksena on "edistää ja rohkaista korkeatasoista kansantajuista historiankirjoitusta".[2] Palkintolajeja on kaksi: kirjapalkinto, jota jaetaan tavallisesti kaksi vuodessa, sekä tuotantopalkinto, jota myönnetään silloin tällöin tunnustuksena elämäntyöstä historiankirjoituksen hyväksi.[1] Palkintoa on jaettu vuodesta 1972[3], ja palkintosummat ovat vaihdelleet 3 000 ja 20 000 punnan välillä.[4]

Wolfsonin säätiö muokkaa

Rahapalkintoa jakaa Wolfsonin säätiö, joka on perustettu vuonna 1955.[3] Hyväntekeväisyyssäätiö tukee vuosittain erilaisia tieteen, teknologian, lääketieteen, opetuksen ja taidealan projekteja noin 35 miljoonalla punnalla.[5] Säätiön perusti postimyynnillä rikastunut juutalainen liikemies sir Isaac Wolfson (1897-1991).[6]

Säännöt[1] muokkaa

Kilpailuun osallistuvien historioitsijoiden on oltava Britannian kansalaisia palkintoa myönnettäessä. Ehdolla olevan kirjan tulee olla julkaistu sinä kalenterivuonna, jona kilpailu järjestetään. Kirjan on täytettävä akateemiset kriteerit mutta oltava silti kansantajuinen ja helposti lähestyttävä.

Voittajat valitsee tuomaristo, joka koostuu neljästä Britannian akatemian jäsenestä. Palkinnot julkistetaan kilpailuvuotta seuraavan vuoden kesänä. Kilpailussa ei ole virallista karsintavaihetta.
