The Platters

The Platters on vuonna 1953 Los Angelesissa perustettu yhdysvaltalainen lauluyhtye. Yhtyeen perustaja oli aiemmin The Ink Spots -yhtyeessä laulanut Buck Ram, josta tuli nyt The Plattersin tuottaja, manageri, säveltäjä ja sovittaja. Yhtye teki kuusi singleä King-levymerkille ennen Mercury Recordsille tehtyjä menestyslevyjä. Yhtyeellä on ollut viisi Yhdysvaltain levylistan ykköslevytystä: The Great Pretender (1955), My Prayer (1956), He's Mine (1957), Twilight Time (1958) ja Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (1958). Singlemenestysten lisäksi yhtyeellä oli viisi Top 20 -listalle päässyttä LP-levyä. Se vieraili myös Euroopassa ja esimerkiksi kappaleesta Twilight Time on tehty eräänlainen varhainen musiikkivideo Roomassa. Lisäksi Smoke Gets in Your Eyes on äänitetty Pariisissa. Yhtye on nähty myös useissa elokuvissa ja se on valittu Rock and Roll Hall of Fameen.

Viimeinen yhtyeen nimen käyttöön oikeutettu alkuperäisjäsen Herb Reed kuoli 4. kesäkuuta 2012 Bostonissa. Hän esiintyi aina vuoteen 2012 saakka.

1950-luvun menestyslevyjen aikaan yhtyeessä lauloivat Reedin lisäksi ensimmäinen tenori Tony Williams, toinen tenori David Lynch, baritoni Paul Robi sekä sopraano Zola Taylor. Williams erosi vuonna 1961 ja hänen tilalleen tuli Sonny Turner. Samalla yhtyeen suosio alkoi hiipua. Vuonna 1966 Taylorin tilalle naislaulajaksi tuli Sandra Dawn ja Robin tilalle tuli Nater Nelson. Myöhemmissä kokoonpanoissa ovat laulaneet ainakin Sherman Jones, Harold Howard, Gene Williams, Lita Fonza ja ykköstenori Monroe Powell.
