Gary Burton

Gary Burton (s. 23. tammikuuta 1943 Anderson, Indiana) on yhdysvaltalainen jazzia soittava vibrafonisti. Hän on kehittänyt pianistisen, nelimallettisen tekniikan; häntä on pidetty innovaattorina, ja hänen tyyliään on jäljitelty laajalti. Hänet tunnetaan myös fuusiojazzn pioneerina, duoformaatin popularisoijana (Chick Corean kanssa) ja merkittävänä vaikuttajana jazzin opetuksessa.

Burton on nimennyt Bill Evansin merkittäväksi innoituksen lähteekseen vibrafonin käsittelyssä. Hän opiskeli Berklee College of Musicissa 1960-luvun alussa ja toimi vuosina 1971–2004 sen henkilökunnassa. Hän oli aluksi professori, sitten dekaani ja lopulta toimeenpaneva varapresidentti. Down Beat -lehti nimesi Burtonin vuoden jazzmieheksi 1968 (nuorimpana koskaan), ja Burton voitti ensimmäisen monista Grammy-palkinnoistaan vuonna 1972. Myöhemmin hän on saanut Corean kanssa Grammyja vuosina 1979, 1982, 1998, 2000 (saajina myös Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes ja Dave Holland) ja 2009.

Burton nähdään elokuvassa Rautalankahurmio. B. King, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Tommy Smith, Eberhard Weber, Stephane Grappelli ja Astor Piazzolla.

Burton oli kahdesti naimisissa. Hänen toinen vaimonsa oli Samuel Goldwynin lapsenlapsi Catherine, jonka kanssa vuonna 1975 solmittu avioliitto kesti lähes vuosikymmenen. Parille syntyi kaksi lasta. Vuonna 1985 Burton ilmoitti julkisesti olevansa homoseksuaali. Hänen pitkäaikainen kumppaninsa on Jonathan Chong.

Vuosina 2004–2008 Burton juonsi viikoittaista jazzshow'ta Sirius Satellite Radiossa. Häneltä on tällä hetkellä saatavilla lähinnä Atlantic Recordsille, ECM Recordsille, GRP Recordsille ja Concord Jazzille tehtyjä levytyksiä.

Burton on esiintynyt Pori Jazz -festivaaleilla vuosina 1974 (New Gary Burton Quintet) ja 1998 (Gary Burton & The Astor Piazzolla Reunion Band).
