Amathila aloitti alakoulun luterilaisen lähetysaseman koulussa (Lutheran Mission School) ja jatkoi alkeisopintojen jälkeen Otjiwarongon alakoulussa. Yläkoulun hän kävi Okahandjan Augustineum Collegessa (1955–1957). <ref name="neweralive.na-2014-7-4"/> Vuonna 1962 Amathila pakeni kotimaastaan Botswanan kautta [[Tansania]]an. Hän sai [[Swapo]]n kansakuntaohjelman kautta apurahan opiskella lääketiedettä Puolassa. Hän valmistui ensimmäisenä namibialaisena naislääkärinä [[Varsova]]n lääketieteellisestä akatemiasta. Hän työskenteli myös poliittisesti ollen Swapon keskuskomiteassa terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin varaministeri ja Swapon naisneuvoston johtaja (1969-1976). Hän opiskeli Ruotsissa [[Karoliininen instituutti|Karoliinisessä instituutissa]] ja sai sieltä lääkärin lupakirjan. Hän täydensi opintojaan ravitsemus- ja kansanterveystieteen diplomilla [[Lontoo]]n School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicinestä ja epidemiologian diplomilla (ranskankielellä) [[Bamako]]sta [[Mali]]sta (1980). Lontoossa opiskelun jälkeen hänen pätevöitymisensä lastenlääkäriksi keskeytyi, koska hän lähti vapaaehtoisena [[Lusaka]]aan [[Zambia]]an työskentelemään Swapon pakolaisleireille. Sieltä hänet siirrettiin [[Angola]]an Kwanza Sulin lastenkeskuksen johtajaksi. Hän työskenteli useilla leireillä ja organisoi terveyteen liittyviä hankkeita.<ref name="neweralive.na-2014-7-4"/> kaikkiaan hän työskenteli lähes 20 vuoden ajan lääkärinä eri pakolaiskeskuksissa hoitaen muun muassa namibialaisia pakolaisia, ja hän hoiti myös haavoittuneita PLAN:in taistelijoita. Kotimaassaan hän on pitkäaikainen kansanedustaja ja ministeri. Hän vannoi ministerinvalan (paikallishallinnon ja asutuksen ministeri) Namibian itsenäistymispäivänä 21. maaliskuuta 1990. Tästä tehtävästä hän siirtyi Namibian terveys- ja sosiaaliministeriksi (1996–2005). Amathila was born in [[Fransfontein]], [[Kunene Region]].<ref name=KD/><ref name=Parl/> Under the [[SWAPO]] Nationhood Programme, she received a scholarship to study medicine in [[Poland]] and graduated from the Warsaw Medical Academy in 1969, becoming Namibia's first female doctor. She later worked in SWAPO refugee camps.<ref name=KD/>

At SWAPO's 1969 Consultative Congress in exile in [[Tanzania]], Amathila became Deputy Secretary for Health and Welfare on the SWAPO Central Committee and Director of the SWAPO Women's Council.
