English: Dr. Jouni Uitto is internationally recognized for his research in skin disorders. The overall goal of his research has been to elucidate the mechanisms that lead to defects in collagen, elastin, and the basement membrane of the skin that would explain the clinical symptoms of disorders such as epidermolysis bullosa and pseudoxanthoma elasticum. His work in refining the pathology and genetic classification of many rare skin disorders has had a significant impact on the care and counseling of patients as well as for the development of novel treatment strategies.
