Peter Lipton

Peter Lipton (9. lokakuuta 1954 New York – 25. marraskuuta 2007 Cambridge) oli yhdysvaltalainen filosofi, joka oli erikoistunut tieteenfilosofiaan. Hän oli Cambridgen yliopiston Hans Rausing -oppituolin professori ja tieteen historian ja filosofian laitoksen johtaja sekä King's Collegen jäsen äkilliseen kuolemaansa saakka.

Lipton opiskeli Wesleyan-yliopistossa ja Oxfordin yliopistossa. Ennen siirtymistään Cambridgeen hän opetti Clarkin yliopistossa ja Williams Collegessa. Lipton tutki muun muassa tieteellistä selittämistä, päättelyä, testaamista, luonnonlakeja ja tieteellistä realismia. Tieteenfilosofian tutkimukset johtivat Liptonin myös tietoteorian ja mielenfilosofian aloille.

Lipton halusi elää juutalaisen elämäntavan, kulttuurin ja etiikan mukaan ilman uskonnon metafyysisen puolen (kuten Jumalan olemassaolon) hyväksymistä.
