Emily Hahn

Emily Hahn (14. tammikuuta 1905 – 18. helmikuuta 1997) oli yhdysvaltalainen kirjailija ja journalisti.

Elämä

Hahn syntyi St. Louisissa, Missourissa, ja muutti 15-vuotiaana perheineen Chicagoon. Valmistuttuaan Wisconsin-Madisonin yliopistosta hän aloitti insinöörintyöt, mutta ei tahtonut pysyä aloillaan, vaan lähti matkaoppaaksi Uuteen Meksikoon. Myöhemmin hän matkusti Belgian Kongoon työskentelemään Punaisen Ristin hyväksi; hän asui kaksi vuotta pygmien parissa ja kulki jalan läpi Keski-Afrikan.

Shanghaissa vietetyt vuodet 1935–1941 jättivät kirjailijaan lähtemättömän vaikutuksen. Hän muutti kuitenkin Hongkongiin ja meni vuonna 1945 naimisiin historioitsija C. R. Boxerin kanssa. Parille syntyi kaksi tytärtä. Perhe asettui Dorsetiin, Englantiin, mutta jo 1950 Emily Hahn muutti yksin New Yorkiin. Hän vieraili säännöllisesti perheensä luona Isossa-Britanniassa.

Hahn kirjoitti lähes elämänsä loppuun saakka The New Yorker -lehteen. Hän kuoli reisiluun murtuman johdosta tehdyn leikkauksen komplikaatioihin 92-vuotiaana 18. helmikuuta 1997.
