Donald W. Winnicott

Donald Woods Winnicott (7. huhtikuuta 1896 Plymouth – 28. tammikuuta 1971 Lontoo) oli englantilainen lastenlääkäri ja psykoanalyytikko. Hän syntyi Plymouthissa varakkaaseen metodistiperheeseen. Hänen isänsä oli kauppias sir Frederick Winnicott ja hänen äitinsä Elizabeth Martha Woods.

Winnicottilla oli rauhallinen lapsuus. Hän kävi koulua Cambridgen Leys Schoolissa ja opiskeli lääketiedettä Cambridgen yliopiston Jesus Collegessa. Ensimmäinen maailmansota keskeytti opinnot. Tuolloin hän toimi apulaiskirurgina (probationer surgeon) kuninkaallisen laivaston hävittäjällä. Hän valmistui lääkäriksi vuonna 1920, ja 1923 (jolloin hän meni naimisiin Alice Taylorin kanssa) hän sai viran Paddington Green Children's Hospitalissa ja hänestä tuli lontoolainen lastenlääkäri. Hän työskenteli siellä 40 vuotta. D. W. Winnicott avioitui toisen kerran vuonna 1958 psykoanalyytikko Elsie Clare Nimmo Brittonin kanssa.

Winnicott nousi kuuluisuuteen, kun Anna Freudin seuraajat taistelivat Melanie Kleinin kanssa siitä, kuka on Sigmund Freudin oikea seuraaja. Toisen maailmansodan loppuun mennessä saavutettiin kompromissi freudilaisten, kleinilaisten ja keskustan välillä. Winnicott kuului keskustaryhmään.

Winnicott tutki ja hoiti psyykkisesti kärsiviä lapsia ja heidän äitejään. Työssään hän saattoi kehittää teoriaansa ja hoitomenetelmäänsä; hänen luomiaan käsitteitä ovat esimerkiksi "holding environment" (kannattelu) ja "transitional object" (siirtymäobjekti), jollaisen perikuva on Tenavien Epun turvariepu.

Winnicottin teoreettiset julkaisut painottivat empatiaa ja mielikuvitusta sekä välittämistä.

Hän kuoli vuonna 1971 useiden sydänkohtauksien jälkeen. Hänen tuhkansa haudattiin Lontooseen.
