Alan Watts

Alan Wilson Watts (6. tammikuuta 1915 – 16. marraskuuta 1973) oli filosofi, kirjailija, luennoitsija, ja vertailevan uskontotieteen asiantuntija. Kymmenissä kirjoissaan ja lukuisissa artikkeleissaan hän tulkitsi tieteellisen tiedon, psykologian ja maailman uskontojen avulla erinäisiä aiheita, kuten henkilökohtainen identiteetti, todellisuuden todellinen luonne, korkeampi tietoisuus, ja onnellisuuden tavoittelu.

Alan Watts, 1922

Muodolliselta koulutukseltaan Watts oli teologian maisteri. Hänen oppilaitoksensa oli Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, josta valmistuttuaan vuonna 1945 hän toimi Yhdysvaltain episkopaalisen kirkon pappina, kunnes erosi tehtävästä vuonna 1950. Wattsin kirjoitukset ja luennot auttoivat tuomaan itämaisia filosofioita ja itämaista ajatusmaailmaa länsimaalaisten tietoisuuteen, mutta ne toivat myös hänet kosketuksiin monien akateemikkojen ja vastakulttuurin vaikuttajien kanssa 50-70 –luvuilla, hänen tavatessa mm. Carl Jungin, Aldous Huxleyn, John Cagen, Joseph Campbellin, Robert Anton Wilsonin, joka mainitsee Wattsin "Valona Tiensä varrella", ja runoilija Gary Snyderin, jonka kanssa ystävystyttyään Watts antoi "filosofisen tukensa" luonnonsuojeluliikkeelle.
